Dev Deepawali, also written Dev Diwali, is the festival Varanasi is most famous for internationally - the night the ghats are lit with lakhs of earthen lamps to mark the gods' own Diwali, according to tradition. It falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, roughly two to three weeks after the main Diwali. This year, Dev Deepawali falls on 24 November 2026.

Why watch it from a cruise
